Man accused in border agent's death said freed in Mexico

June 25, 2008

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said officials are "shocked and appalled" that a Mexican judge has released a man imprisoned in connection with the death of a Yuma-based U.S. Border Patrol agent.

Jesus Navarro Montes, arrested Jan. 22 in Mexico, was recently released from a Mexicali prison.

Navarro had been sought in Mexico for allegedly smuggling migrants.

Navarro Montes is a suspect in the murder of Border Patrol agent Luis Aguilar.

Chertoff said in a statement released in Washington that his agency is working with "a determined Mexican government, and our Department of Justice, to seek swift justice for the Aguilar murder."

Aguilar was run over and killed Jan. 19 in the patrol's Yuma sector while trying to deploy spike strips to stop a drug-filled vehicle in

REJOICE!

Pro-Amnesty Incumbent Chris Cannon Soundly Defeated
Wednesday, June 25 @ 13:51:11 CDT

http://www.alpac.us

We have some great news to report from the battle front! Notorious amnesty supporter and Open Borders fanatic, Chris Cannon has been ousted from Congress.

Our movement has been after him for the last four years because of his support for the Bush/McCain/Kennedy Amnesty legislation. Today is a good day.

Chris Cannon lost his race in the GOP Primary last night, after facing a challenger with prior political experience.

Mr. Jason Chaffetz criticized Chris Cannon on spending, energy, and most importantly immigration. Chaffetz made a strong comparison of his immigration stances compared to Cannon and criticized Cannon for supporting In-State Tuition for illegal aliens. It is also important to note that awareness on this issue has climbed rapidly in
Utah this year, since the state legislature passed strong laws to crack down on illegal immigration.

Chaffetz beat Cannon 60% to 40%, which is considered a landslide!

While the candidate who spends the most wins the race over 94% of the time, Chaffetz was outspent by Cannon 7 to 1!

FROM ROY BECK - NumbersUSA

For a decade, Rep. Cannon's open-borders friends at the Wall Street Journal, the White House and Grover Norquist's conservative circles provided last-minute endorsements, visits, money and questionable advertising that enabled him to keep his congressional seat in the face of spirited but underfunded opposition from anti-amnesty Republican opponents.

His passionate embrace of illegal aliens won him honors from the National Council of La Raza and love notes from open-borders newspaper editorial writers across the nation.

Court OK's border fence despite enviornmental worry

By Eileen Sullivan - Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Supreme Court said Monday it won't stand in the way as the U.S. extends its security fence hundreds of miles along the border with Mexico, allowing building to proceed full-speed despite claims that it harms the environment and animals who live in the area.

Given sporadic attention for years, the concept of a border fence took on new life after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, which also revived the nation's heated immigration debate. Intelligence officials have said the holes along the southwest border could provide places for terrorists to enter the country.

Adios to the Southwest?

Chad Groening - OneNewsNow - 6/23/2008 10:55:00 AM

A talk-show host from Arizona is warning that if the U.S. government doesn't fix the U.S.-Mexico border problem, a large geographical area of the country could be lost.

Darrell Ankarlo hosts a talk show on Phoenix station KTAR, and for years he has called attention to the problem of illegal immigration. Ankarlo recently published Another Man's Sombrero: A Conservative Broadcaster's Undercover Journey Across the Mexican Border. He argues it is time to get serious about the issue.

"We don't need 10,000 guys on the border right now. We need [30,000 to 40,000] on the border," he contends. Ankarlo says the drug cartel needs to be sent a message -- and he argues that by beefing up the Border Patrol, the U.S. can take hundreds of millions of dollars in drugs off American streets.

Ankarlo believes this problem has serious implications as well for national sovereignty. He fears that if illegal immigration is not treated as a major threat, the U.S. will lose border states like Arizona, New Mexico, and parts of southern California.

In order to stop the flood of illegal aliens, says Ankarlo, Americans must stand together, stop name-calling, and deal with the real issues

House Appropriations Committee Rejects ICE Worksite Enforcement Amendment

This morning, Rep. David Price (D-NC), Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee for Homeland Security, presented the FY09 Homeland Security Appropriations Bill to the House Appropriations Committee. According to Chairman Price’s earlier press release, the bill mandated that $800 million of the funds allocated to ICE be used to identify and remove criminal aliens in an effort to reprioritize ICE’s law enforcement activities.  This spending requirement could restrict ICE’s ability to fund other enforcement priorities should the need arise. Additionally, the bill provided approximately $90.7 million for enforcement which is short of the President’s request of $93 million.

To counter this move, Rep. Jack Kingston (R-GA) offered an amendment that would shift from a non-enforcement area of the bill just $2.3 million specifically to help fund ICE’s worksite enforcement efforts.  Earlier today, the House Appropriations Committee rejected Rep. Kingston’s amendment in a largely partisan vote.

In support of his amendment, Rep. Kingston told the committee that:

  • Workplace enforcement is important because employment is the driving force behind illegal immigration.  The demand for fraudulent documents made by illegal aliens creates the thriving criminal enterprises that make them.
  • ICE’s Worksite Enforcement arm plays a key role in fighting against illegal immigration and homeland security, promotes national security, protects critical infrastructure and ensures fair labor standards.
  • Worksite Enforcement Investigations focus on employers involved in criminal activity or worker exploitation, including:
    • alien smuggling, document fraud, human rights abuses and/or other criminal or substantive administrative immigration or customs violations;
    • substandard or abusive working conditions;
    • employers who utilize force, threat, or coercion, such as threats to have employees deported in order to keep the unauthorized alien workers from reporting the substandard wage or working conditions.
  • The presence of illegal aliens at a business does not necessarily mean the employer is responsible. Developing sufficient evidence against employers can take years; therefore, ICE builds worksite investigations in stages.
No industry, regardless of size, type or location, is exempt from complying with the law.  These investigations often find that some of the employers are not paying a living wage, paying overtime, etc.

House committee makes progress on border laws

Rep. Swinford heads committee considering city, county and state officers to deport illegal immigrants

By Bob Campbell - Staff Writer

A Texas House committee instructed by Speaker Tom Craddick of Midland has held two hearings on training city, county and state law enforcement officers to assist federal immigration agents and is considering recommending the plan to the 81st Legislature in January.

State Affairs Committee Chairman David Swinford, R-Dumas, said illegal border crossings have been cut by 60-70 percent since the first of this year and drug gangs pushed into an internecine paroxysm of self destruction.

His committee convened in March in Edinburg on the Texas-Mexico border and again last month in Austin, where members separated feasible ideas from ones that would be quashed in appellate courts.

"It would let the cities, counties and state criminal justice system take training and be able to do the same things the Border Patrol does," said Swinford. "We looked at laws that have passed scrutiny in Oklahoma and if they continue passing, we'll have them in our report in September or October."

He said the nine-member committee is viewing a variety of issues alongside U.S. Customs & Border Protection's Section 287-G, which allows delegation of authority to deport undocumented workers and pursue human and narcotics trafficking, violent crimes and money laundering with five weeks of U.S. Border Patrol training.

In a similar Craddick initiative, House Corrections Committee Chairman Jerry Madden, R-Plano, is reviewing requiring city and county jails to notify federal authorities before releasing "illegals."

Appropriations Committee Chairman Warren Chisum, R-Pampa, and Swinford visited one of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's "war rooms" near Edinburg and watched the surveillance of a Mexican drug gang about to move a load of narcotics.

"There was all kinds of activity, speeding and running stop signs," Swinford said. "It built and built and finally there was a drug deal moving. They're fighting among themselves because we're creating havoc and their cost of doing business is going up."

He said the House's $110 million border security appropriation last year in Austin has been a major factor.

With increases in the Border Patrol's 16,000 agent force, the Texas Department of Public Safety is rotating troopers to the border 200 at a time and the Department of Parks & Wildlife is assigning game wardens. "The cooperation right now is the best we've ever seen," Swinford said.

"Warren and I learned that we're using Border Patrol helicopters and unmanned aircraft. The Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, N.M., has just put 300 new agents into service and is about to graduate 300 more.

"We ought to give our Border Patrol agents the absolute right to defend themselves because they're down there in a dangerous situation. Most of the drug deals are out in the country and it's a full bore deal."

Swinford said other report topics will be border fencing and hiring undocumented workers.

"We have a 1,241-mile border with Mexico with 96 percent of it held by private owners," he said. "Fences are problematic for folks whose only water is in the Rio Grande because they may have 10,000 head of cattle. If illegals can't cross, neither can cattle. We take away people's property rights when we do that.

"We don't have a verifiable good source of identification. If they bring in two forged documents just like the ones you carry around, I don't think we ought to be shooting the businessmen because they don't have any way to tell."

An encouraging email from a Roanoke TX resident:

We have driven to San Diego twice in the last couple of months.  There is incredible border patrol activity from about Van Horn all the way to San Diego.  In Texas, the DPS is also out in force along I-10.  During our recent return trip (12 June), we saw at least 8 DPS patrol cars....all with stops of "suspicious" looking vehicles.

I think Texas is really committed to controlling the border.  In addition, the increase in Border Patrol activity is encouraging to witness first hand.

Far different intensity when compared to our drive to San Diego last Fall.

Dems raise stakes on immigration

By: David Rogers

June 17, 2008 07:37 AM EST

Going into November’s elections, House and Senate Democrats are outbidding the White House on spending for immigration enforcement, with a special emphasis on deporting people convicted of major drug offenses and violent crimes.

Immigration remains a highly divisive political issue — especially in the House Democratic Caucus. But targeting convicted criminals is seen as safe ground for the party and a pressure point to highlight shortcomings in the current enforcement system.

A Homeland Security budget bill now moving through the House Appropriations Committee specifies that at least $800 million be spent after Oct. 1 to identify and remove the most violent and dangerous criminals from the U.S. And Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Robert C. Byrd (D-W.Va.) is expected to take an even more aggressive approach Wednesday in his own plan, adding more money for Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations within Homeland Security.

                              VERY IMPORTANT!!

According to NumbersUSA.com we should call our Texas congressmen/women Kay Granger, John A. Culberson and John Carter at the Capitol Switchboard and 202-224-3121 and ask them to vote for more funding to the Department of Homeland Security appropriations bill.  They are all on the committee.

Judicial Supremacy Strikes in Oklahoma

Phyllis Schlafly

Monday, June 16, 2008

The elected representatives in Oklahoma passed a law to stem the tide of illegal immigrants and, faster than you can say "judicial supremacy," a federal judge blocked its enforcement. The court suspended key sections of the law even before it was due to take effect on July 1.

The Oklahoma Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act was designed to prevent illegal immigrants from taking jobs from Americans and from evading taxes by working in the underground economy.

The Oklahoma law passed the State Legislature by overwhelming, bipartisan, veto-proof majorities (88-9 in the House, 41-1 in the Senate) and was signed by Democratic Gov. Brad Henry. Public opinion polls reported that the law enjoys 88 percent public approval, and it was recognized as a model for other states to copy.

The law required employers who have contracts with the state of Oklahoma to use the Oklahoma Status Verification System to verify the legal status of their employees. The law expanded the definition of "discrimination" to include firing a U.S. citizen while retaining an illegal as an employee.

The penalty for violating this law was requiring the employer to withhold state taxes in a manner to ensure that Oklahoma would receive all proper employment taxes, including taxes for those employees who are not legally in this country. Oklahoma should certainly be able to protect itself against the non-payment by illegal immigrants of taxes that Americans pay as a matter of course.

Even though the new Oklahoma law didn't go into effect, it is credited with reducing Oklahoma unemployment significantly below the national average. The bill's sponsor, State Rep. Randy Terrill, said, " Oklahoma is no longer OK for illegal aliens."

Subordinating Immigration to Foreign Policy

By Mark Krikorian, June 17, 2008 5:30 PM

DHS announced today that the process leading to visa-free access to the United States has been started for, I kid you not, Bulgaria . Michael Chertoff said "I look forward to the day when we greet the first visa-free travelers from Bulgaria on our soil."

I don't. First of all, we still don't have a fully implemented entry-exit system, so we don't know whether a visitor actually left when he was supposed to — which means we don't know how many visa overstayers there are. A fully functioning exit-tracking system should be a prerequisite to a visa-waiver program.

Federal contractors must 'E-Verify' employees' eligibility to work

Executive Order: Amending Executive Order 12989, as Amended

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2008/06/20080609-2.html

Bush issues an executive order requiring companies to use an electronic verification system that is linked to the Social Security database. Critics have pointed to a 4.1% error rate in the database.

By Nicole Gaouette, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

WASHINGTON -- President Bush issued an executive order today requiring all federal contractors to use an electronic verification system to ensure their workers can legally work in the United States.

The move is the latest step by the administration to ratchet up enforcement of immigration laws by using tough measures, including a series of high-profile raids on work sites and factories across the country.

U.N. Sends Mexican Nationalist to Investigate Prince William County, VA

You won't believe this!  After a group called "Mexicanos Sin Fronteras" (Mexican without borders) complained about Prince William County's common-sense measures against illegal aliens, the United Nations decided to send their special rapporteur on "migrants' rights" to investigate the town!

Whom are they sending? A complete open-borders globalist named Jorge Bustamante.  This cat has explicitly claimed that the United States should not have authority to unilaterally enact ?oue? own immigration laws!  Last year, he called on Mexicans to boycott companies that support Republican candidates.

Prince William County Chairman Corey Stewart is having nothing of it, responding "[The U.N. has] a history of trying to embarrass the United States while turning a blind eye to the regimes that are actually not just committing human-rights abuses, but engaged in genocide."

If there's a silver lining to this outrage, it is that it will help wake up Americans to the fact that the attack on our immigration laws is a direct attack to our sovereignty.

Chertoff urges speed in building fence
Opposition puts border agents at risk, he says

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Friday he had attended the funerals of too many Border Patrol agents killed in the line of duty to permit environmentalists to block construction of barriers and all-weather road along portions of Texas' border with Mexico.

Chertoff, speaking during an interview with the editorial board of the Houston Chronicle, pitted the safety of Border Patrol agents against the efforts of environmentalists to stymie Bush administration plans to complete a border fence before leaving office in January. Some 670 miles of pedestrian fencing or vehicle barriers are planned along the 1,947-mile U.S.-Mexico boundary

State leaders mull appeal of ruling on immigration law

OKLAHOMA CITY — A day after a federal judge halted portions of Oklahoma's controversial immigration law, the author of the measure said he's working to determine whether he can personally intervene in the case.

Rep. Randy Terrill, R-Moore, said the judge's rulings, issuing a temporary injunction and denying a motion to dismiss the case, could be appealed.

U.S. District Judge Robin Cauthron granted a preliminary injunction Wednesday in a case that pitted the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and several Oklahoma chambers against the state. The injunction prohibits two employer-related sections of House Bill 1804 from taking effect July 1.

Both parties duck on immigration

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080608/ap_on_go_co/immigration_tricky_politics

WASHINGTON - The tricky politics of immigration, an issue once seen as a driving force of the 2008 election, have relegated it to a back but hot burner in the presidential campaign debate and paralyzed Congress on the topic.  Both John McCain and Barack Obama support giving legal status to millions of illegal immigrants, a position that strategists see as crucial to winning over Hispanics. But Republican and Democratic candidates are also wary of alienating white conservatives and blacks who oppose granting legal status or benefits to people who broke the law to come to the United States.

EDITORIAL: America's 'identity crisis'

http://www.washtimes.com/news/2008/jun/08/americas-identity-crisis/

The Bradley Project on America's National Identity issued a report which contends that America's national identity is being weakened by the spread of multiculturalism and globalization. The Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation established this project in 2007. The vast majority of the 2,421 respondents in a Harris Interactive National Survey commissioned by the Bradley Project expressed concern that American society is increasingly polarized and divided - and that knowledge of the nation's common heritage and ideals is eroding. The results are disturing and point to a growing problem that requires attention.

Dallas  Prepares for 2010 Census

by Tom McGregor  - Dallas Blog  May 27 - Tmcgregordallas@yahoo.com

The Dallas County Commissioners’ Court is making preparations for compiling data on the 2010 U.S. census. During this week’s public hearing, Gabriel Sanchez, the regional director of the U.S. Census Bureau gave a presentation emphasizing the importance of counting every person who lives in Dallas County, whether that person lives in the County as a legal resident or an illegal immigrant.

In an interview with the Dallas Blog, Marisela Rosales from the U.S. Census Bureau noted that the Census mandates, “every person counts.”

Millions of dollars of federal government money is at stake, so it’s necessary for an accurate count of the census in Dallas County. A higher population count means more government funds for Dallas County.

A questionnaire from the U.S. Census Bureau will be mailed to County residents soon; it will simplified and modified to seven questions that ask about your name, age, gender, nationality, family relations and home ownership.

The U.S. Census Bureau will open seven new offices in Dallas County, starting in October, 2008.

Pomona residents march against racist checkpoints

The Party for Socialism and Liberation handed out signs calling for an immediate end to the racist checkpoints and ICE raids in the city. As a member group of the ANSWER Coalition, a mainstay at immigrant rights marches and anti-racist rallies, we were warmly received as we marched.

Pamphlets and flyers touting the Gloria la Riva and Eugene Puryear presidential campaign were also distributed.

They explained the difference between the PSL’s demands and the Democratic and Republican capitalist duopoly. More importantly, we spoke of the urgent need for socialism, an economic system based on people’s needs over profits.

Many in the crowd were appreciative of the demands for unconditional amnesty, an immediate end to raids and deportations, free access to quality health care and education, and a minimum $15 per hour wage for all workers regardless of their immigration status.

Immigrant Latino Workers Hit Hard by Economic Slowdown, Pew Hispanic Center Report Finds

The Pew Hispanic Center today released Latino Labor Report, 2008: Construction Reverses Job Growth for Latinos. Using data through the first quarter of 2008, the report finds the economic downturn having a disproportionate impact on Hispanic workers. From an historic low in late 2006, the unemployment rate for Latinos rose sharply in 2007 and currently stands well above the rate for non-Latinos.

Immigrant Hispanics, especially Mexican immigrants and recent arrivals, have been hurt the most by the slump in the construction industry. Weekly earnings for most groups of Hispanic workers, particularly construction workers, also slipped backward in the past year. There are no signs Latino immigrants are leaving the U.S. labor market but they now play a smaller role in the growth of the Hispanic workforce than in recent years.

The report is available at the Pew Hispanic Center's website, www.pewhispanic.org.

The Pew Hispanic Center, a project of the Pew Research Center, is a non-partisan, non-advocacy research organization based in Washington, D.C. and funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts.
