Facts

Is illegal migration a huge problem? Check out these facts:

Depending on which report you read, there are between 12 and 20 million illegal aliens living in the United States. Independent research has determined that U.S. government figures are grossly understated.

The 2000 U.S. Census estimates that more than 400,000 illegal aliens annually cross our borders. Independent studies estimate 500,000 annually.

In 1996, illegal aliens displaced more than 730,000 American and legal immigrant workers annually at a cost of $4.3 billion a year. The problem is far worse now.

  1. Illegal aliens in the U.S. are not doing "jobs Americans won't do." Less than 2% work in agriculture or landscaping. The majority work in construction, manufacturing, food processing, hospitality and restaurant industries, taking jobs formerly held by American citizens and legal immigrants.
  2. Each illegal alien that gets an 'over-the-table' payroll job in the United States has to commit identity theft to obtain documents to gain employment. Entering the U.S. illegally is not a felony but identity theft most certainly is.  The current annual costs of illegal aliens from educating the children of illegal aliens in public schools, providing medical services in emergency rooms, and incarceration — amount to about $36 billion per year. Annual fiscal costs in 2010 would increase to $61.5 billion and would rise to $106.3 billion by 2020.
  3. Despite immigration reform laws, federal law and laws in some states prevent social service employees from asking for proof of a welfare applicant's citizenship status. As a result, 21% of illegal aliens receive some form of state welfare or federal aid. Each year, state governments spend an estimated $11 billion to $22 billion to provide welfare to immigrants.
  4. In 1980, our federal and state prisons housed fewer than 9,000 criminal aliens. By the end of 1999, these same prisons housed over 68,000 criminal aliens. Today, criminal aliens account for over 29 percent of prisoners in Federal Bureau of Prisons facilities and a higher share of all federal prison inmates.
  5. A recent Department of Homeland Security report notes that in 2005, Federal drug seizures totaled 1,129,275 pounds of cocaine and 6,866,465 pounds of marijuana. Much of that was along the southern border. The report goes on to state that Federal law enforcement now estimates that only 10-30% of illegal aliens are actually apprehended and only 10-20% of the drugs are seized.

According to a 2006 study by the Violent Crimes Institute, an estimated one million sex crimes have been committed by Illegal Aliens in the United States between 1999 and 2006.

Twelve Americans are murdered every day by illegal aliens, according to statistics released by Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa. If correct, that's up to 4,380 Americans murdered annually by illegal aliens. King also reports 13 Americans are killed daily by drunk illegal alien drivers for another annual death toll of 4,745.

According to a report in the spring, 2005 issue of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons, 84 California hospitals are closing their doors as a direct result of the rising number of illegal aliens and their non-reimbursed tax on the system. While there are 43 million without health insurance in this country, the report estimates that at least 25 percent of those are illegal immigrants. The figure could be as high as 50 percent.

The same report says, "many illegal aliens harbor fatal diseases that American medicine fought and vanquished long ago, such as drug-resistant tuberculosis, malaria, leprosy, plague, polio, dengue, and Chagas disease."
